Women in Business: Jessica Foord brings Powar to breakfast meeting

2008-11-12 00:00

Jessica Foord (third from left) was the guest speaker at the Women in Business breakfast meeting at the Maritzburg Golf Club yesterday. (Left to right) Ali Engelbrecht (CEO WIB), Taryn Jacobs (events), Rose Sivright (sponsor) and Rebecca Watford (President WIB) were also present.

Foord (22) is the brave survivor of a brutal gang-rape, who has turned champion for women who have suffered the same trauma. Women in Business yesterday secured their largest crowd to date for their monthly breakfast forums after inviting Foord and allowing businesswomen to hear firsthand as she relived her ordeal. Foord was raped close to a popular dam and fishing spot for Hillcrest locals and her father was forced to watch.

The 140 businesswomen came loaded with women’s underwear to donate to rape victims, who it is envisaged will be helped by Protecting Women Against Rape (Powar) centres that are soon to be established by Foord. Foord told The Witness that underwear is the first thing taken as evidence from rape victims and this is a small gesture for victims, who end up stripped naked with no clothes left to wear after this process.

Foord hopes to have Powar up and running by March 2, next year, which incidentally will be the one year anniversary of the rape and the date of the court appearance of her assailants. Foord will need R3, 5 million for each centre.
