Women’s Day celebration to feature Maritzburg Quartet

2010-07-27 00:00

THE Liberty Mall Ingrid Roberts’ Insights and Inspirations evening, which takes place at the Edgars Court from 7 pm on Saturday, August 8, has another surprise in store for guests — the award-winning Maritzburg Quartet will be performing.

The young foursome, noted for their fine tenor voices, will perform a selection of songs.

The event, which stars well-known celebrity cover-girl and businesswoman Ipeleng Mhari, also features two local “sheroes”, one of whom is a retired French lecturer, Glen Flanagan, who has been nominated as a finalist in this year’s Shoprite Woman of the Year competition.

Flanagan, who lives in Scottsville, has started several community projects under the umbrella of the French Presence in KwaZulu-Natal, focusing on giving French lessons in areas throughout Pietermaritzburg and as far afield as Nquthu. The community projects involve setting up sewing groups, beadmaking, community gardens, a new school library and the refurbishment of schools. One of her recent successes has been the establishment of a sewing group of 20 grandmothers from France on the outskirts of Pietermaritzburg.

Flanagan works with the museum and in partnership with KZN Tourism, but she funds many of the projects herself. She emphasises the need to develop practical skills so that the beneficiaries are able to generate sustainable employment.

Tickets are still available at R200 each and include a three-course dinner and a free gift for each guest from Clinique valued at R275. For reservations and more information, contact Gail at 082 445 2577.

The charitable beneficiary of the evening is PADCA.
