Womens’ art exhibition

2009-06-25 00:00

THE work of KwaZulu-Natal women artists, whose work is part of the Tatham collection, can be seen in the Schreiner Gallery at the Tatham Art Gallery from today until September 6.

This exhibition follows in the footsteps of Into the Light, a Schreiner Gallery exhibition of works in the Tatham collection which took place at the beginning of 2009, which showcased the creativity of women artists, both black and white, who worked in KZN during the early and middle years of the 20th Century.

The new exhibition, KZN Women Artists, brings together works from the Tatham collection that date from the latter part of the 20th Century to the present.

Their creators are also from different cultural groups, and while some of these women artists still make use of traditional art and craft mediums, there is often innovation regarding size, scale, context and content.

The overall subject matter of the display centres around the African earth and its creatures and crops, but individual artists also refer to a wider experience of the globe and the cosmos. Collectively these images contribute to a rich experience of cross-cultural artmaking in KwaZulu-Natal.
