Women’s golf: Midlands tops

2012-03-24 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal Ladies Golf Association kicked off their series of Championship events with the popular Jean Duncan Taylor Memorial Trophy competition at a very hot Maritzburg Golf Club on March 11.

Lee Daff, Pat Smith, Lisa Thomson and Wayne Marcus won with 91 points, while John and Yvonne Otto and Simone and Neville Raymond finished second.

On March 15 the second event of the series took place. Local knowledge for the Midlands girls paid off with Wendy Slabbert winning the Marjorie Goodbrand Bronze Championship Trophy on gross 91 and Val Frankish runner up on gross 92, both from Victoria Country Club.

Pietermaritzburg will come alive once again at the oldest club in the country tomorrow when a field of 64 gold, silver and junior amateurs will battle the 36 hole Championship on the extended Maritzburg Golf Club course.

Our very own junior Michaela Fletcher (MGC) will be hoping for home course advantage whilst up against some of the top seeds competing from outside of KZN such as Nobuhle Dlamini +3 (Centurion), Monja Richards +1 (Nelspruit), and Bonita Bredenham +1 (Blyvoor).

All the KwaZulu-Natal squad players are participating as the selectors will be watching closely to make final selections for the announcement of the teams going to the WGSA 72H Tournament in May at Polokwane.

The top 16 finishers from each of the Championship, Silver and Bronze divisions will play match play knockouts on Monday and Tuesday.
