WOODLANDS Secondary school celebrated its 110th anniversary last week, earning the prestige of becoming one of the oldest schools in KwaZulu-Natal.

The school has swelled from just 74 registered pupils in 1902 to 1 060 in 2012.

The school principal, who is also a former pupil at the school, Rashida Hajee, said, “Woodlands has become one of the oldest, largest and most prestigious schools in the province. It has provided education facilities for thousands of pupils, many whom are in leadership positions worldwide.”

Some of the pupils that attended Woodlands Secondary School include, the Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Johannesburg Adam Habib, uMgungundlovu District Mayor Yusuf Bhamjee and head of the Stem Cell Unit at the Lung Institute of Western Australia and Dr Yuben Moodley.

In 2008, Simphiwe Mthethwa matriculated at the age of 12 and in 2012, she became the youngest University of KwaZulu-Natal graduate.

Hajee said they have been receiving messages of hope and support from the community.

The school caters not only to the Woodlands community, but Northdale, Edendale, Imbali, Hammersdale, Sweetwaters and surrounding informal settlements.

Hajee has been serving at the school for the past 40 years and is the first female principal in the history of the school. She said teaching is a labour of love.

She believes that an energised teacher and a focused pupil breed success.
