Woodlands actor for reality tv show ‘class act’

A PIETERMARITZBURG local, 23-year-old Rosa Whitcher, has made it through to the finals of the TV reality show Class Act. The drama student from the University of Cape Town is one of the last 10 competitors in the reality show that could see one contestant winning an eight-week visit to a film school in the United States, along with an acting contract.

Whitcher was raised in Woodlands and attended Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High. There she met a drama teacher who inspired her to act.

She had always been interested in acting. While at Clarendon Primary she was disappointed to be cast as a link in a “machine” in Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox.

“I knew I had so much more potential,” said Whitcher, “But I [performed] with everything in me, nonetheless…”

Growing up in a single parent household, Whitcher says, she struggled to achieve her dreams. However, her family was always supportive.

“It’s not every day that a young coloured child says ‘Mummy, I want to be an actress’ without being told to consider a ‘real job’.”

Whitcher obtained a specialised acting theatre and performance degree from UCT, and five months later found herself on local television.

“I feel so blessed with this opportunity to do Class Act,” she said.

Each week the 10 contestants will compete in various acting scenes and viewers will vote for their favourites. Then there will be a weekly elimination show.
