Woodlands residents caught up in war for land

2014-09-09 00:00

SITE 11 residents are allegedly turning on their Woodlands neighbours as the war for land rages on.

The residents continued to blockade the Otto’s Bluff road yesterday morning as they demanded to be given the vacant land next to them.

A source in the area, who declined to be named, said the residents had blocked the road throughout the weekend and yesterday.

“The municipal security officers came out in full force with the public order police [unit] and they cleared the road,” he said.

He said the dispute over land has raised tensions between the two communities. “They are now turning on the Woodlands community. Meanwhile this is a council decision. We, the Woodlands community, have been the ones who have put up with Site 11 for the past 20 odd years.”

The source said the Site 11 community had allegedly tried to petrol bomb a home in Woodlands in retaliation for their structures being demolished.

The Witness was unable to confirm this allegation independently, however.

By yesterday afternoon, the road had been cleared although the police stood guard right next to Site 11.

Head of security Kwenza Khumalo said the residents had closed the road in the early hours of yesterday morning and that security officials had to go back in there and reopen it.

Mary Schalkwyk, the councillor in the area, said that she was not aware the road had been closed again yesterday morning.
