Woodlands stabber banned from school

WOODLANDS matriculant Kylin Freason (18), who is charged with the attempted murder of fellow pupil Krishen Govender (18) on October 13, was yesterday granted bail of R1 000 on strict conditions by Pietermaritzburg magistrate Divesh Mootheram.

The magistrate was earlier informed by the prosecutor that the victim — whose condition on Thursday was reported to be critical — has stabilised.

Mootheram was also yesterday handed a letter from Woodlands Secondary School indicating that Freason has been suspended from school, but that arrangements are being made to enable him to write his examinations.

Mootheram granted Freason bail on condition that he does not return to Woodlands Secondary, and effectively placed him under house arrest.

He ordered that Freason may not leave his home in Eastwood unless he obtains permission from the investigating officer in the case, or for education purposes.

He also may not communicate in any way, including via cellphone, with the victim or any state witnesses.

The magistrate postponed the case until November 6 pending further police investigations into the incident.

Freason allegedly stabbed Govender a number of times during a confrontation during a tea break at the school.

Govender was reportedly stabbed four times in the chest and once in his back.

Teachers and pupils allegedly intervened to stop the stabbing.

Witnesses, including the victim’s sister, were reportedly traumatised by the stabbing.
