Workers breathe life into Old Howick dump

2009-04-30 00:00

For proof that beauty can be found in some of the most unexpected places, look to the Msunduzi municipal garden refuse site at Old Howick Road.

Two workers at the site, Fanboy Mbele and Patrick Ngcobo, have landscaped a beautiful garden outside the rubbish yard, using discarded plants.

Mbele said he and Ngcobo came up with the idea of making the garden because they were tired of people throwing away their refuse outside the fence.

"I just thought that people like to look at pretty things and if we made the place into a pretty garden then they would stop littering there," said Mbele.

How to help: staff ask residents to bring water

Fanboy Mbele said the biggest challenge in maintaining the garden is that there is no water for the plants. "We ask the people that come by to bring us water and we bring some ourselves."
