Working for a clean city

2014-07-11 00:00

MSUNDUZI Municipality will be using the Mandela Day campaign to clean the city and bond with its residents.

Councillors in all wards will be holding clean-up campaigns in specific spots, starting at 8 am. For more details consult your ward councillor on the numbers provided below, which were taken from the Msunduzi website: Spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha said that this was not only a response to the national call by President Jacob Zuma, it was also to show the municipality’s intent that it was working towards a clean city.

When the municipality went under administration and suffered a shortage of funds, some of the first departments to suffer as a result of budget cuts were those responsible for cleaning the city as well as cutting the grass and maintaining the verges. Mafumbatha said the aim of the Mandela Day campaign was “to create a clean city that all of us can be proud of. The emphasis being on the fact that the city belongs to all of us who live in it,”she said.

Mafumbatha welcomed The Witness “Cleaning Up The Capital Campaign”, saying a collective approach was necessary. She said that through The Witness she was aware of initiatives big and small across the city. For example Witness staff will be cleaning up their neighbourhood in Willowton Road.

Mafumbatha urged all Msunduzi residents to join in. “We want to create awareness and a culture of cleanliness. All people who are interested in joining their ward councillors and doing something for Madiba, please join us,” she said. Meanwhile, responses are pouring in to The Witness campaign and there are a range of big and small projects that will be happening. We will tell you all about them in the days ahead. If you want to tell the city of your own initiatives, please send details of your clean-up activities to or
