Workplace death: Tile avalanche kills worker

2011-11-15 00:00

A CASUAL employee at QPet Manufacturers in Willowton died tragically when a consignment of ceramic tiles fell on him yesterday morning.

The firm manufactures PET plastic bottles and jars.

Kassim Kazeembe (41) was about to off-load the tiles from a container when the accident happened.

ER24 paramedics spokesperson Derrick Banks said Kazeembe sustained fatal head injuries. “Paramedics found the man lying on the ground with a pile of tiles removed to one side to gain access to him. He succumbed to his injuries there,” said Banks.

A senior employee at the firm, Riyad Moosa, said Kazeembe started working there on Friday.

It is believed that the load of ceramic tiles may have shifted in transit, so when the man opened the door, the tiles came down on him with force.

“He had opened one side of the container door and was opening the other side when the load came crashing down on top of him. The ceramic tiles slid and the load gave way.

“We don’t have any contact details on him as he was a casual worker who just started on Friday,” said Moosa.

He said the deceased’s family arrived at the firm yesterday to hear exactly what happened.

Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said an inquest docket has been opened. — WR.
