Workshop: Specialist to talk on anxiety disorder

2010-10-08 00:00

THE South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) will be holding a workshop on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at Buckston Workshop at 132 Langalibalele Street, Pietermaritzburg, tomorrow, which will coincide with World Mental Health Day.

The workshop will start at 10am. The entrance fee is R20 and the main speaker will be Dr Claire Hartshorne a clinical psychologist.

According to Dr Eugene Allers, a Gauteng-based psychiatrist, up to 25% of South Africans could suffer from PTSD. He contends that when crime and motor vehicle accidents are taken into consideration, six million South Africans could suffer from PTSD. Allers said PTSD is an anxiety disorder that can develop after traumatic experiences such as a car accident, hijacking, rape, or even witnessing such events.

Sadag is co-ordinating over 50 workshops around South Africa on World Mental Health Day.

Tomorrow’s workshop is being co-ordinated by local support leader Dr Linda Van Rooyen, who can be contacted on 072 430 8899.

Symptoms can be helped and Sadag has a list of therapists and clinics across the country for anyone needing treatment. SMS 31393 or log on to
