World Cup: Get the latest action, stay on the ball with ‘The witness’

2010-06-08 00:00

FOOTBALL fans, hold on to your hats, strap yourselves in and grab on for dear life because the planet’s biggest roller-coaster ride — the Fifa World Cup — begins on Friday, and The Witness will be bringing you comprehensive coverage.

From Friday’s opening ceremony and the first game between Bafana Bafana and Mexico at Soccer City until the closing ceremony and final at the same venue on July 11, we will bring you the drama, tension and exhiliration of the world’s greatest sporting spectacle, being hosted for the first time on the African continent.

Witness sports editor and football writer Marc Strydom and photographer Ian Carbutt will be based for the duration in Johannesburg, which will be the centre of the action of the World Cup tournament. They will travel the country from the first round to the final, covering close to 20 matches, press conferences, Bafana training sessions and all the South African national team’s matches.

The Witness will dedicate at least two extra pages to the World Cup each day.

There’s plenty of action off the field too, and in KwaZulu-Natal our dedicated World Cup news reporters, Lloyd Burnard and Thobani Ngqulunga, will bring readers news from the base camps, fan parks, businesses and anything else in our area that’s got the gees.

After six long years of waiting and hard work for South Africans, the World Cup is about to begin. Sit back, relax and enjoy the ride along with you favourite KZN daily newspaper. We know we will.
