World Cup: fun galore at public viewing area

2010-05-13 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG may not be a World Cup host city and it may not have an official fan park, but it has been confirmed that the Durban University of Technology Indumiso campus in Imbali will be the venue for the district’s official Fifa World Cup public viewing area (PVA).

uMgungundlovu District Municipal manager Sbu Khuzwayo confirmed on Tuesday that the PVA at Indumiso will be one of seven viewing areas in the district.

The Indumiso venue is to be the “official” one.

There will be other PVAs at Midmar Dam, Mpofana, Impendle, Richmond, Mkhambathini and uMswathi.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the PVA at Indumiso, though this will be on a first-come-first-served basis as the viewing area will not accommodate more than 5 000 people.

There will be food and drinks (including alcohol) on sale, and people will not be allowed to bring their own food and drinks into the PVA.

Khuzwayo stressed that the official PVA will be providing “entertainment galore”, with as many local acts performing as possible.

For the time being, all Bafana Bafana games, as well as both semi-finals and the final, are scheduled to be shown on the big screens at the Indumiso PVA.

Midmar Dam’s PVA will appeal more to corporate citizens and the tourism market and will be funded by the Economic Development and Tourism Department, KZN Ezemvelo, uMgungundlovu District Municipality and corporate funders.

Entry at Midmar will be R5.
