World champions to represent KZN this weekend

2012-06-08 00:00

NO fewer than four previous world champions are included in the strong KZN team chosen to represent the province at the 2012 SA Canoe Marathon Championships this weekend.

These include current men’s World Champion, Hank McGregor, previous Junior and U23 World Champions, Grant van der Walt, his Junior World Champion brother Brandon and K2 World Champion Ant Stott, and Cam Schoeman. Add Len Jenkins to this impressive line-up and you have one of the strongest KZN men’s teams yet.

The women’s team is a lot smaller with only U23 Jenna Ward in the K1 category, teamed up with Nikki Russell, who recently moved from East London to Durban, in the K2. They are joined here by the very consistent team of Debbie Whitton and Carmen Blakeney.

In the junior category, Donovan Wewege goes into the event as K1 favourite and, with his partner, Murray Starr, they have a good chance in the K2’s as well. Emma Horner and partner Brittany Petersen are also likely to dominate in the girls’ races.

Racing begins tomorrow with the K1 races at a new course on Arieskraal Dam near Elgin in the Western Cape and is followed by all the K2 events on Sunday.
