World-class synthetic athletics track for PMB

2008-04-24 00:00

THE construction of a world-class synthetic athletic track in Pietermaritzburg is due to begin this year.

MEC for Sport and Recreation, Armichand Rajbansi, said yesterday that his department has invested in the synthetic track at Pietermaritzburg and Richards Bay.

Tabling the department’s budget for the 2008/09 financial year, Rajbansi said the first phases are due for completion by 2009.

He added that with regard to the Pietermaritzburg track, money has already been allocated to the uMgungundlovu District Council.

IFP MPL, Eddie Coleman, however, felt that more sports facilities should be built in Pietermaritzburg.

“A community indoor sporting centre is needed in Pietermaritzburg. The only indoor facility in Pietermaritzburg is the YMCA, which costs about R1 040 an hour to hire. Speak to the ANC … so that an indoor facility can be built … ,” Coleman said.

The DA’s George Mari expressed concern at the “conflict” between the Msunduzi and uMgungundlovu municipalities over the track.

According to Mari, they cannot agree on where the tracks should be built. Mari, however, congratulated the department on what it had achieved on its “petty cash budget”.

ACDP MPL, Jo-Ann Downs, concurred, however, she did note that other departments were performing Sport and Recreation functions.

Rajbansi announced a R34 million budget for the construction of 20 sports fields and 30 combination courts for rural areas in KZN.
