Worlds View race gets ProTour title

2008-07-09 00:00

Pietermaritzburg has once again attracted a major world cycling event.

Following the successful staging of the Worlds View Challenge by Treble Entertainment in the city in February, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) ProTour Council announced yesterday that the event will come under its tour banner from 2010 onwards.

With the new status, the event will see the best pro cycling teams in the world competing in the city, something that has never before been possible in SA.

The inaugural Worlds View Challenge attracted internationally renowned cycle teams such as ProTour, Liquigas and Milram, racing for the first time in Africa.

Treble Entertainment event director Alec Lenfern said: “This is an amazing development … The top teams were really impressed and this is obviously the news that has gone back to the UCI.” He said it is an honour to be asked to join the UCI ProTour.

Pietermaritzburg tourism director Melanie Veness expressed excitement about the news. She said the city has never hosted something of this magnitude.

Msunduzi municipal manager Rob Haswell said that when it was reported that the city could become the bike capital of Africa many regarded it as hype. However, the UCI announcement indicates that the optimism was not unfounded, he added.

Next year’s event will take place in February.
