X-Files on the big screen

2008-08-01 00:00

THIS week’s new offerings on the local cinema circuit are Kismat Konnection at Nu Metro and Ster Kinekor; The X Files — I Want to Believe at Ster Kinekor and CineCentre and You Don’t Mess with the Zohan at CineCentre. The Incredible Hulk comes back to Ster Kinekor.

Kismat Konnection is directed by Aziz Mirza and stars Haidar Ali, Vidya Balan, Juhi Chawla and Shahid Kapur. In college Raj Malhotra was a star, but now, as a Toronto-based architect, things are not going so well. So he goes to an astrologer to see if his life can be improved. Of course, on the way, it gets much more complicated.

X-Files — I Want to Believe is directed by Chris Carter and stars the usual suspects in David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson along with Billy Connolly and Amanda Peet. Obviously it will appeal to fans of the TV series, but it is also a stand-alone thriller, and for once not bursting with explosions and special effects. Mulder’s strange ideas have seen him thrown out of the FBI, but Scully has to call him back to help with a complicated case when an agent disappears.

You Don’t Mess with the Zohan is directed by Dennis Dugan and is a vehicle for Adam Sandler, who also co-wrote the script. Adam Sandler comedies are what they are — stupid, often gross but usually saved by sheer good nature. So expect the same here. Sandler plays a Mossad agent with super powers and incredible physical prowess, but all he wants is to be a hairdresser in New York City. Also starring John Turturro, Emmanuelle Chriqui and Nick Swardson.
