Xenophobia: PMB to host events aimed at building relationships

2010-07-08 00:00

A CREATIVE programme to build relationships in the current climate of rumoured xenophobic attacks will take place in Pietermaritzburg this weekend.

The initiative has been organised by the KwaZulu-Natal Christian Council (KZNCC) and several other organisations, including the KZN Refugee Council.

Tomorrow there will be a workshop on social cohesion. This will be followed by a concert on Saturday that will feature the dance and music of African countries such as Congo, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Kenya, Algeria, Egypt and Malawi.

The programme ends on Sunday with a cultural fair. There will be food stands of exotic dishes and stands on traditional attire, history, music and languages.

Doctor Lucas Ngoetjana of the KZNCC said persistent rumours on the purported reappearance of xenophobic attacks after the Fifa World Cup, have been around too long to be ignored.

He said the programme will include discussions on the role of religious organisations, civil society law enforcement authorities and provincial and local government in the prevention of xenophobic attacks.

The event takes place at Caribe-Caribe, a conference centre in Clarendon. Those who would like to attend should call KZNCC at 033 345 4819 or e-mail info@kzncc.org.za.
