Xingwana spends big on car hire

2013-11-08 00:00

CAPE TOWN — Lulu Xingwana, minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, spent R30 000 on car hire in the current book year to date.

In the previous book year, Xingwana spent almost R70 000 on car hire, despite her department to date having spent almost R3 million on official vehicles for Xingwana and her deputy minister Henrietta Bogopane-Zulu.

Of the R30 000 paid to rent cars, R13 000 was for a “family emergency ” in the Eastern Cape.

Xingwana in answering a question in parliament said that a Jaguar was hired in August 2012 for this family emergency. Her answers indicated the emergency was for a court case on the custody of children.

Xingwana was last year accused of using violence to remove a nephew’s baby from the baby’s mother. A court later ordered the baby should be returned to its mother, who had to fetch her child from Xingwana’s ministerial home in Pretoria.

Minister in the presidency Collins Chabane said the limits on what ministers can budget for cars will soon be ready.
