Yet another lucky local cast in ‘Spud: The Movie'

THULA is certainly the cat that got the cream. The cat, who lives in Ladysmith, has been cast to play Roger in Spud: The Movie.

The four-year-old feline lives on a petting farm-cum-riding stables with his owners, the Truebodys, and found fame through pure luck. “The people from the movie contacted me about a black Labrador … but the puppies we had were too small. They asked if I had any cats … and Thula was chosen,” said Aileen Truebody.

When asked if Thula has any previous acting experience Trubody responded: “Oh yes … He acts hungry and always acts for more attention.”

Thula was mothered by a Bengal cat and fathered by a wild cat, a combination that produced a kitten with “so much character and a delightful personality”, said Truebody.

Apparently the boys on the set of Spud have taken a real shine to their furry co-star. “The boys love him, they can’t believe how calm he is and how comfortable he has made himself on the sets,” said Alta Opperman, who works at the Truebodys’ riding school.

Thula has gone to five shoots so far, including the audition. His last take will be on March 28.

He has made himself at home at the Michaelhouse set. “We took him into the dorms and he made himself right at home. It was quite amazing,” said Truebody.

But Opperman doesn’t think he requires that much praise.

“He basically just lies around all day and gets love,” she said.
