You needn’t be a monarchist to enjoy this

IF YOU missed the Pietermartizburg City Orchestra and the Pietermaritzburg Amateur Music Society (Pams) Choir’s royal wedding-inspired concert, Wedding Album: A Royal Entertainment, at Maritzburg College, then make sure you book seats for the repeat concert in Howick this weekend.

Conducted by Bill Bizley, the concert provided right royal entertainment for the packed house in the Victoria Hall, which was a hospital in the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902.

The evening kicked off with the orchestra’s performance of the Allegro from Handel’s The Water Music, before the musicians joined members of the Pams choir to perform Handel’s Zadok the Priest and Wagner’s bridal chorus from the opera, Lohengrin.

After the power and pageantry of these works, the orchestra gave the audience a lively rendition of Bedrich Smetana’s Polka from The Bartered Bride, before Moray Comrie sang Get Me To The Church On Time from the musical, My Fair Lady, accompanied by the choir and orchestra.

Two works by Mendelssohn followed — his beautiful Nocturne and Wedding March from Incidental Music to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, before the evening’s entertainment concluded with Elizbethan Serenade, made famous by James Last.

Wedding Album: A Royal Entertainment might have been inspired by the recent nuptials of Prince William and Kate, the new Duchess of Cambridge, but you don’t have to be an ardent monarchist to enjoy it. Catch it if you can.

• Wedding Album: A Royal Entertainment is at Howick High School on Sunday at 3 pm. Tickets R40. To book your seat phone 083 284 8798. Tickets will also be available at the door.
