Young ANC supporters show off their ‘swagger’

2014-02-01 00:00

YOUNG ANC supporters in Port Shepstone yesterday launched a fashion label designed by local entrepreneurs to show off their “swagger”.

The youths, now called “swaggers”, have eschewed the party’s regular regalia, particularly the ANC election campaign T-shirts featuring the face of President Jacob Zuma, in favour of outfits that express their personal style.

Now their latest-trend outfits, which include designer T–shirts reading “My ANC My Swagg”, will be distributed in the entire province and country wide as the ruling party’s way to reach out to young people.

Apart from T-shirts, the designers also made ANC-branded garments and tracksuits.

These were showcased in a fashion show at the clothing label’s launch in Port Shepstone yesterday.

The designer behind the initiative, Nqobile Cele (28), said the exercise was to attract young people born post-1994 to the ANC.

“We try to bring them closer to the ANC. The ANC is glamorous and you can join it regardless of your age,” Cele said.

She said the initiative started when she partnered with graphic designer Mxolisi Phehlukayo to come up with outfits that have the ANC branding.

“I started this when I was doing my first year in business management. I was with guys doing fashion and art. We thought we should do something for young people,” said the ANC Youth League member.

The pair has since partnered with 10 other local clothing designers to make the ANC-branded clothes.

ANC chairperson Senzo Mchunu praised the Port Shepstone youth for their initiative.

“We are inspired by you and what you are doing,” he said.

“This is not an organisation of old people,” he said.
