Youngster celebrates 21st by donating gifts to hospice

THROWING a big bash and getting showered with gifts to mark turning 21 is tradition, but for Northdale resident Kreyslyn Chetty the occasion was more about giving to the less fortunate.

The big-hearted youngster, who celebrated his coming of age on Saturday, asked his well-wishers not to buy him presents but to donate money to the Msunduzi Hospice instead.

On Sunday Chetty handed over R3 480 to hospice chairperson Pete Jugmohan, who is still stunned by this good deed.

“This youngster had a party and told his parents that he did not want presents, but instead he wanted money to be donated to the hospice,” he said.

“I am still amazed by what this young man did and I hope other people are encouraged to do the same. R3 480 might not seem like much to other people, but to us it can change lives.

“Funding for our organisation is a big issue because it is drying up and we are trying our best to raise funds, but we need all the help we can get. I hope other people are encouraged to do the same,” said Jugmohan.

Chetty, who is studying for a BComm in accounting with Unisa, said he is happy that he managed to raise the money because the people at the hospice need it more.

“I feel that God has blessed me with enough things so I should give to those who are without. That is when I got this idea.

“It was the best choice I have ever made and knowing that I helped someone is the best gift of all,” said Chetty.
