Youngster meets swimming hero

2014-08-04 00:00

“TODAY changed my life. I will look back in 20 years and still remember it.”

This is how Henré Louw (12) summed up his day of training with his hero, Cameron van der Burgh, at the Wahoo Aquatic Centre in Sandton after the budding swimmer entered and won Disney XD’s Aim High competition. The competition is held annually by Disney XD to inspire young people to achieve their dreams.

Henré said he had learnt a lot from Van der Burgh — especially not to stress too much before a race.

“I have been swimming for six years and sometimes I think too much before the race then I don’t always do so well,” said Henré.

“Cameron taught me how he handles the pressure and how to stretch properly. I could not sleep last night, I was that excited.”

Van der Burgh said it was important for young aspiring sports stars to have mentors and role models.

“A role model and a mentor helps one to reach your goals,” said Van der Burgh, who last week competed in the Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
