Youngsters make off with breast cancer awareness display

The Monday afternoon incident was captured on camera and, although Cascades marketing manager Kerrie Muldoon says they will not press charges, the centre wants its display back.

The display gave people information about living with breast cancer and was part of the mall’s breast cancer fundraising campaign, she said.

“On Monday afternoon, three youngsters thought it was a joke to take the giant cancer ribbon from the mall.

“For this behaviour, we would like those responsible to come in and make a generous donation to breast cancer,” said Muldoon.

She said the theft of the giant cancer ribbon, made of pink balloons, was discovered yesterday morning.

CCTV footage of the incident shows two men and a woman who appear to be in their early 20s walking out of the centre with the balloons over their shoulders. The trio attached the balloons to the front of their bakkie before driving away.

Although Cascades would not press charges against the three culprits, Muldoon said they did not condone theft.

“Do you walk into somebody’s home and steal their décor?

“We won’t be pressing charges, but two of their faces are quite familiar, so we’ll be on the lookout for them,” she said.
