Youth: Abstinence campaign kicks off

2008-06-11 00:00

ABSTINENCE as a way of preventing the spread of HIV infection among the youth is the cornerstone of a campaign in June by the Health Department, Centre of Hope, uKhozi FM, Hibiscus Coast Municipality, Sisonke District Municipality and uMsunduzi Municipality.

The campaign was launched in Mpumalanga township on Saturday, under the theme Zithande (“Love yourself”). The campaign will run until June 13. The closing event will be held in Pietermaritzburg’s Qokololo stadium.

The organisers say in a statement that the campaign aims to develop skills that people “can use to protect and promote their sexual health through eliminating the risks that they might face in the course of their sexual experiences”.

“An abstinence-based approach as an alternative to a more comprehensive approach receives very minimal, if any, coverage as a preventative measure for both primary and secondary prevention”.
