Youth Day: Xenophobia march planned

2008-06-11 00:00

Msunduzi Municipality’s Youth Unit kick-starts its Youth Month celebrations in the city tomorrow when about 500 pupils and school leavers are expected to join foreign nationals in a march against xenophobia.

Youth Unit chairperson councillor Musawenkosi Mchunu said the march will highlight how South Africa’s liberation fighters were welcomed in other African countries. The procession will end in front of the city hall with a dance to sybmolise the peace between the city’s residents and foreign nationals.

The theme of the celebrations is “proud of our past, certain about the present, confident about the future and proud to serve”.

Commemorating 32 years since the , student uprising in Soweto on June 16, 1976, the Youth Unit will on Monday arrange for 10 buses to ferry young people to Umkhanyakude District Municipality in the north of the province. There the provincial Youth Day crowd will be addressed by Premier S’bu Ndebele.

On June 25, the Youth Unit plans to launch a Youth Advisory Centre next to Tatham Art Gallery to provide career counselling and entrepreneurship advice. It will also induct members of its Local Youth Forums, which will communicate its decisions and programmes in 37 wards and put across young people’s views of how the provincial budget should be spent.

Mchunu said a “youth in business” breakfast will be held in July.
