STARTING them young in running can only benefit the future of the Comrades Marathon and with this in mind, the Department of Sport and Recreation in conjunction with KwaZulu-Natal Athletics, hosts the sixth KZNDSR/KZNA Youth Run on Saturday May 31.The event has shown incredible growth through the years and a record 8 000 young runners from across the province are expected to participate.

Formerly known as the National Youth Run, the event’s goal is to expose youngsters to the joys and benefit of running, while giving them a taste of the Comrades experience.

There are two runs, a five and 10 km, the age limit for the 10 km being 15 and nine for the shorter route. In the build up to the race, a series of youth runs have been run in all 11 districts, where the top 60 finishers were selected for Saturday’s finale.

Both races start at 8.30 am at Hoy Park and, as the event required pre-entry due to the overwhelming response from schools and district participants, registration has closed. No entries will be taken on Saturday.

Prizes are offered for the first 10 boy and girl finishers in the 10 km race and the top five schools with the most finishers. Participants of both runs get T-shirts and all finishers receive a medal.
