Yves in India Blog: Day 5

2008-10-15 00:00

I feel a bit of a wimp. Before I came I asked our Delhi correspondent Christine Pemberton to recommend a running route. Lodhi Gardens, she said; there's a regular circuit and you get to see the tombs. So every day I've been meaning to go, but I have seen not a single jogger on the streets and my courage quails at the thought of trying to cross roads on my way to the Lodhi Gardens, because it feels wrong to take a taxi to go for a run. So, curses, I've resorted to the gym every morning, and the hotel pool. They keep the pool at a temperature of 28 degrees Celsius. I ask why. Some of the guests like it, especially the older ones. But then, sometimes they have to lower the temperature to 28 degrees because of the ambient heat.

The service at the hotel is out of this world. It's so good that I wonder if the staff aren't maybe too servile. But then it occurs to me that it's only a little bit more polite and considerate than many of the Indians we've been meeting. If staff behaved like this in South Africa it would feel that they're grovelling because general courtesy levels often feel very low. But it makes being attended to hand and foot feel normal. But that's not normal is it?
