WITNESS sportswriter Lungani Zama has won Newcomer of the Year in the print and Internet category at the SAB Sport Journalism Awards, held in Sandton last night.

Zama won for two columns: “Nobody’s Perfect” and “Jose could have gone to Hollywood”. The judges praised the quality of his writing and his way with words.

His win in the prestigous awards comes after he was named last week as sports columnist of the year, KZN, in the Vodacom Journalism awards. He is now a national finalist.

The overall winner at last night’s awards was Lucky Sindane of the Mail & Guardian, who won for his coverage of the Caster Semenya affair and its ramifications in two pieces: “Chuene’s trail of lies” and “Secret report reveals Chuene’s plotting”.
