Zebra Poaching: Local pair Guilty

2010-07-01 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG man and his son have been convicted in Camperdown of illegally hunting a zebra in the area in August 2008.

Johannes Erasmus (55) of Prestbury and Dewald Erasmus (20) are due to be sentenced on July 13.

They were both found guilty of the illegal hunting of protected game, namely a zebra valued at R10 000, and related offences.

A third accused, Willem McCullum, was acquitted of all charges.

They were all arrested on Piece of Mind farm near the Lion Park in possession of a dead Burchell’s Zebra mare on the back of the bakkie on August 16, 2008.

The high court in February this year gave the go-ahead for the forfeiture of Erasmus’s Toyota Hilux bakkie, which was used during the commission of the crime.
