Zille makes award to KZN resident

2009-03-17 00:00

DA leader Helen Zille flew into Durban yesterday to present her party's fourth "everyday South African hero award".

Chatsworth resident Dawn Philemon was rewarded for her commitment to the fight against drugs in her community.

Zille said Philemon is one of those people whose "pursuit of excellence and devotion to duty make South Africa a better place".

The DA leader will be presenting awards to distinguished individuals across the country in the run-up to the elections.

Philemon's fight against drugs is motivated by love for her son, and her desire that other families should not have to suffer like her family has.

In 2000, her flat was allegedly petrol-bombed by a gang of drug dealers. She was also beaten up by drug dealers who demanded that she pay off the debt accumulated by her son.
