Zondi case: He was smothered, says expert

2011-01-27 00:00

A FORENSIC pathologist testifying at the trial of two women and three men charged with the robbery and murder of Professor Samuel Zondi (71) in Pietermaritzburg in September 2009, said yesterday indications were that he was smothered to death.

Dr Gantcho Gantchew said a black plastic rubbish bag was tied around Zondi’s head and around his mouth and neck. There was also a scarf around his head. His wrists and hands were tied with three men’s neckties, and he found no “defensive” type injuries on the badly decomposed body.

Zondi’s body was found in his flat by family members about three days after he was killed, according to previous evidence. The flat was partially burned.

The evidence of accomplice witness, Simphiwe Gwala, who has admitted taking part in a plan to rob Zondi, is continuing.

Gwala said the plan was to tie Zondi up and steal his bank cards, but not to murder him.

On trial are Gugu Ndlovu (34), Jabulile Ngcobo (24), Sakhile Hlongwa (20), Mwandile Zwane (20) and Mondli Cele (22). All pleaded not guilty.
