Zondi ‘embodied values of SAPS’

2014-01-30 00:00

SERGEANT Thamsanqa Zondi was the embodiment of the values of the police service, Community Safety and Liaison MEC Willies Mchunu said while visiting the murdered officer’s family yesterday.

The MEC said Zondi, who was also a prince, was “one of the many police officers who give up their lives to protect the public; who say to criminals ‘before you get to the community, you will have to go through me first’.”

Zondi, the son of Inkosi Nsikayezwe Zondi, died on Monday during a shoot-out with robbers in Richmond.

He, his brother Prince Ndabezinhle and another officer, Pepino Mpansa, had pursued a gang who had shot and killed a security guard during a botched robbery in the town.

Mpanza was also shot and is currently in a serious condition in hospital.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said Zondi had not shirked his responsibility as a police officer by hiding behind his royal title.

“The fact that he was one the first people who responded to the shooting shows that he was a dedicated officer. He did not say ‘I am from the royal family’ and sit back,” she said.

Mchunu called on the community to value police officers and realise they are the only thing standing between them and criminals.

Zondi’s funeral will be held on Saturday.
