Zulu funny man Sifiso Nene wants your vote

2012-10-22 00:00

ZULULAND’S favourite comedic son is urging his supporters to make sure they vote for him in this year’s South African Traditional Music Awards (Satma), in the Indigenous Comedian category.

The Ngwelezane-born Sifiso Nene, who will be starring in an upcoming Standard Bank television commercial which he also wrote, first came to fame when he won the SABC 1’s So You Think You are Funny in 2009.

This year, Nene walked away with the Audience Choice Awards at the South African Comics Choice Awards.

The 30-year-old completed his matric at Nongweleza High School and thereafter went to Durban University of Technology to study Information Technology where he discovered his talent to entertain.

Nene started by performing in small comedy shows like Amahlaya eTheku and 100% Zulu Comedy.

“After winning So You Think You are Funny, I knew straight away that comedy is my calling.

“I quit studying and decided to pursue a career in the entertainment industry,” said Nene.

Nene also starred in the movie Taxi Ride directed by David Tlale.

When asked where he sees himself in five years, he replied: “I am not the type of person who sets goals; God always surprises me.”

According to Nene, a good comedian is one who is original and does not copy other comedians.

“We all have our own stories. There is no need to imitate anyone else,” said Nene.

He advised aspiring comedians to strive first to build their names and not to chase money, which rolls in afterwards.

“It is not an easy process, however, once you are well-known you can make a lot of money,” explained Nene.

He added that comedians from Zululand need to attend all events that take place in the area, as there is not a proper platform in the area as yet.

“I encourage local upcoming comedians to attend all the events and make their work known until they get recognition,” he said.
