Zululand NGOs get funds from USAid

2012-11-19 00:00

FIVE Zululand NGOs involved in the fight against HIV/Aids are each R2 million richer following a donation from USAid.

The international aid arm of the U.S. government gave the money to the Sexual HIV Prevention Programme (Shipp), which is in partnership with the Zululand District Municipality.

The five organisations emerged as the winners in a competitive process run by Shipp. Selected from 47 applicants were Education Support Services, Human People to People TCE (Take Control of the Epidemic), Intshakaza Youth Organisation, Edumbe HIV and Aids Action Group, and Sizanokwazi Organisation.

The awards were made at a function on Thursday, attended by Kevin Bellis, chief of party: Shipp; Chalone Savant, Pepfar’s KZN liaison officer; Zululand District Mayor Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi; councillors from several local municipalities, and traditional leaders.

Savant said their goal, outlined by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton last November, was “an Aids-free generation”.

“It is possible in Zululand,” she assured the audience.

“We could do this thing, it is within our reach.”

It could happen, she said, if no-one was born infected with the virus; the risk of infection was lowered for the older generation; and if the infected could recover with the help of medical breakthroughs.

Bellis said Shipp’s aim in making the grants was to support civil society organisations helping communities that are difficult to reach.

KaMagwaza-Msibi gave the donors the assurance that the funding would be tracked to ensure it was used appropriately.

“There is nothing I hate more than people who beg for funds and then use it among themselves.”
