‘Zuma’ funds to improve Zulu Bible

2015-01-05 00:00

THE Jacob Zuma Foundation donated R500 000 to help improve the Zulu translation of the Bible.

Donated at a special event held at the St Joseph’s Cathedral Church, Mariannhill, Durban, the foundation — of which President Jacob Zuma is a patron — said the funds to be donated to the Roman Catholic Church will allow for a “more accurate” version of the Zulu Bible to be developed.

“As a speaker of isiZulu, President Zuma has long felt that the existing isiZulu translation of the scriptures is inadequate and a new version will now be directly translated from Biblical languages, such as Hebrew and Aramaic, straight into isiZulu. This new version will be more accurate and closer to the original manuscript. The only latest version translated by the Bible Society was done in 1959 and leans on other languages rather than isiZulu.

“This work will culminate in a more relevant Zulu Bible, which is considered a critical evangelisation tool for both worshippers and scholars,” the J.G. Zuma Foundation said in a statement.
