Zuma: good that Madiba is home

2013-09-04 00:00

NELSON Mandela’s medical team from the MediClinic Heart Hospital in Pretoria was still in charge of his care, but now they were based at the former president’s Houghton home.

This was revealed by President Jacob Zuma yesterday, when Zuma used a gathering of senior reporters and editors in Pretoria to provide an update on Madiba’s condition.

“We should feel really good that he reached a point where the doctors that were treating him indicated that he could go home.

“We have to acknowledge that he is old and that he is not well,” Zuma said.

Mandela was discharged from the Pretoria hospital this week after spending almost three months in the intensive care unit. He had initially been admitted to treat a recurring lung infection.

Last week, presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj said Mandela’s home had been equipped to continue the intensive care he received in hospital, with the same medical team from the hospital to look after him in his home. Maharaj said Madiba would be readmitted to hospital if necessary, and asked that the public respect Mandela and his family’s privacy while he is being cared for at his home.

Zuma yesterday said he was happy that Mandela was at home and that “he is still with us”.
