Zuma on Zim

2008-04-10 00:00

The president of the African National Congress (ANC), Jacob Zuma, has often been criticised for making uninformed utterances or for tailoring his views to fit a particular audience, but at least he is prepared to engage on topical questions. This has recently included a refreshing, if restrained, comment on the delay in issuing the results of the presidential poll in the Zimbabwean elections. He has criticised the keeping of both the nation and the international community in suspense, commenting that it does not augur well.

Zuma’s approach is in welcome contrast to the bland opaqueness of President Thabo Mbeki who has simply said that the elections in Zimbabwe have gone very well and that we must patiently await the completion of the process. How can a statesman of such wide experience be so naïve?
