Zuma sets out action  plan

LAND redistribution will be key to the ANC’s plan of action for 2013.

In his January 8 statement presented at the party’s rally at King’s Park Stadium, Durban, on Saturday, President Jacob Zuma emphasised party unity, hard work, training and integrity as the foundations for the ANC to put into action its plans, including land and economic reforms.

The statement sets out the party’s programme for the forthcoming year.

Nathi Mazibuko, of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, said Zuma presented the bones of the plan, which would be fleshed out when he gave his state of the nation address to Parliament in February.

Economist Kwanele Gumbi said he sensed a note of urgency in the address, which had been missing in previous addresses.

“Next year is an election year and this January 8 statement had all the ingredients to demonstrate that the ANC knows what it is up to.

“The statement said, ‘You can trust us with the economy, you can trust us to bring about change. We know what we are doing, here are our policies and this is our plan’,” said Gumbi.

Political scientist Dr Lubna Nadvi said the true test would come later in the year when it would become clear whether the policies outlined in the statement had resulted in changes. She said she remained disappointed that not more had been said about corruption within the government.

“This has become a huge problem for the ANC given the number of its members who have been implicated in corruption scandals in the past,” Nadvi said.
