Zuma to speak at MK burial

2010-08-20 00:00

PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma is scheduled to deliver a keynote address at the re-burial of the remains of ANC member and uMkhonto Wesizwe (MK) commander “Jerry Zithulele” Ivan Khuzwayo, who was killed in exile in Angola in 1988.

ANC KZN provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala confirmed to The Witness that Zuma will deliver the address at Khuzwayo’s homestead in Ngilanyoni, Camperdown, tomorrow.

Khuzwayo’s remains were exhumed in Angola earlier this week by his family and the ANC.

Zuma apparently named him “Jerry Zithulele” while they were in exile because of his calm and collected manner.

Khuzwayo left the country at age 13 in 1975 when his parents, Babu and Peggy Khuzwayo, settled in the newly independent Mozambique.

He went on to join the ranks of MK in Angola where he received military training in Benguela province at the ANC training centre at Nova Catangue.

He was later part of the first contingent of MK cadres to open the military camp in the Quibaxe Camp in the north of Angola.

He furthered his studies in inorganic chemistry in Cuba.

However, despite excelling in his studies, Khuzwayo decided to return to Angola to serve as an MK soldier.

Zikalala said Khuzwayo’s re-burial is part of an ANC campaign to restore the legacy of the revolution and that the remains of other ANC cadres who died in exile will also be brought back to the country.
