Zuma’s hacked website up and running again

2008-02-04 00:00

THE popular Friends of Jacob Zuma website is expected to be up and running again today following its closure over the weekend after an alleged hacking incident.

The administrator of the website, Ranjeni Munusamy, said a decision was made to shut down the site following damage caused by hacking on Friday.

She told The Witness that the matter was reported to the police and that they are currently trying to track down the hackers.

Munusamy said she has no idea who might be behind the hacking, but the possibility of “sinister forces” behind the hacking has not been ruled out.

“There have been several attempts to hack the site in the past and that is why we decided to move the server out of the country,” she said.

Munusamy says the website is one of the most popular sites in South Africa and receives an average of about 30 000 hits per day. Even higher traffic volumes were recorded during Zuma’s court cases and in the days leading up to the ANC Polokwane conference in December last year.

Damage incurred to the site includes the headlines and some of the pages being defaced.

The website was launched about two years ago with the view of offering support to Zuma and offering “objective” news on the matters relating to him.
