A perfect day greeted over 1 000 participants at Hazelmere Dam last weekend for the fourth and final event in the 2008 aQuelle DPHS Mudman Series.

The half distance event consisted of a 375 m swim or two-kilometre paddle. Participants then switched to mountain bikes and rode 10 km over dirt roads and tracks before setting out on two legs for the 2,5-km run stage. Aidan Nugent took the win (53:53) followed by Murray Starr in second (56:02) with David Ferguson third (1:04.27).

The full distance event consisted of a 750 metres swim or four-kilometre paddle, 20-km mountain bike ride and five-kilometre trail run.

Andrew Baker won the title (1:17.20), followed by Andrew Birkett and Francois Roux. Monica Botha was the first woman home before Heather Wenke and Abigail Moss.

With a series of events that have consistently grown in size, with 2008 seeing nearly 4 000 athletes competing, the Mudman Series is proving to be the biggest multisport gathering in KZN.
