bafana: player ratings out of 10

2009-06-15 00:00

Itumeleng Khune 6

Had one save to make that was straight into his arms. Could have come off his line more often for set pieces.

Siboniso Gaxa 6

Got forward well, though his crosses were at times off the mark, except the one Mashego should have scored from.

Tsepo Masilela 6

Also got forward well and showed some good skill. Had little to do defensively dealing with right midfielder Karrar Jasim.

Aaron Mokoena 6

Had some shaky touches that would not have inspired confidence in the players in front of him.

Matthew Booth 7

Played with heart and outshone Mokoena in defence, while dictating play from left central defence.

Benson Mhlongo 6

Wasted as a third central defender when it became clear the Iraqis weren’t going to attack much, and he would have been better utilised in midfield.

Macbeth Sibaya 8

Some crunching tackles that helped SA enjoy the lion’s share of possession, and passing crisply to his man, which hasn’t always been his strength.

Kagisho Dikgacoi 5

Put in some good passes, but not at his best in the challenge, sluggish and did not join the attack to support Modise enough.

Teko Modise 7

Showed some superb touches, but was asked to do too much as the lone creative midfielder.

Bernard Parker 5

Shot weakly in good positions and was unfortunate to be on the goal-line to stop Mashego’s goal-bound header.

Terror Fanteni 5

Had a header over the bar, but was not seen much otherwise.

Katlego Mashego 5

Could have been brought on earlier and his header almost won the game, but he should have scored when through in a one-on-one.

Steven Pienaar 7

Surely fit enough to play more than eight minutes. Was immediately influential and should have been brought on with at least half-an-hour to go.
