eThekwini joins hands to better service delivery

IN an attempt to improve effectiveness in service delivery by local government, eThekwini municipality has embarked on a campaign to establish partnerships with other municipalities in the province.

For the first time, the municipality had its executive meeting outside Durban to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with uThukela district municipality in Ladysmith.

The MOU is for co-operation on service delivery between the two municipalities. The agreement is the first of its kind among KwaZulu-Natal municipalities.

This will see the municipalities share knowledge on local economic development, finance management, tourism, good governance and community participation.

Last year, Co-operative Governance MEC Nomusa Dube commissioned a forensic investigation into the affairs of the uThukela municipality. The investigation led to the arrest of a number of officials linked to a R12 million water scam.

eThekwini mayor James Nxumalo said the signing of the MOU will encourage co-operation between the two municipalities in order to bolster service delivery.

“I am particularly pleased with the fact that our water and sanitation unit has already started working with uThukela District Municipality on possible areas where we can share best practice in terms of water provision and preservation,” he said.

“We already have a completed water project that we have done at the city of Bulawayo in Zimbabwe where we also have a sister city relationship,” he said.
