BEING awarded three awards for Municipal Excellence at the weekend, is the motivation eThekwini needed to record a clean audit.

So said city manager Sbusiso Sithole after the ceremony held by the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), adding they were working around the clock to ensure the “feat is achieved in the shortest time possible”.

The Metro won awards for the Best Implemented Integrated Development Plan, Most Innovative Infrastructure Award for Sanitation Project and the Best Metropolitan Municipality in KZN.

Sithole said the milestone was an indication that as a municipality they were on the right track in terms of service delivery.

“The Most Innovative Infrastructure Award for the Sanitation Project that we have rolled out in informal settlements and transit camps is another accolade we pride ourselves on because it talks to issues that are related to human dignity.”

Mayor James Nxumalo said they were happy to be recognised for their work.

Cogta MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube said the purpose of the awards was to inspire innovation and improve service delivery in municipalities.

“Ultimately, we are one government and we all work for one public, and therefore we need to work together.”

The aim was to use the winning municipalities as models of study for others to improve service delivery in our province, she said.
