education: new union formed

2009-11-25 00:00

THE amalgamation of two big unions within the university and further education sector sees the birth of a new union to be called the National Tertiary Education Union.

In a statement, the new union heads said the merger of the National Tertiary Education Staff Union (NTESU) and the National Union of Tertiary Employees of South Africa (NUTESA) is a response to the government’s re-engineering of the sector, which has highlighted the need for a single voice to represent workers in the tertiary education sector.

They said the industry faces major issues such as increased attacks on academic freedom and deteriorating conditions of service, amongst other things. Hence, it was becoming increasingly imperative to reduce fragmentation of representation and form a single voice that would speak for workers in the sector. — WR
