i-Limb: Mooi River community rally to fund brave woman’s dream of a bionic high-tech arm

2009-07-03 00:00

COURTNEY Harvey, a spirited 20-year-old with a R350 000 dream of having a new high-tech prosthetic arm, won’t give up.

In fact, she is halfway to having that dream become a reality.

Harvey’s story was published in The Witness last year, shortly after a big company in South Africa retracted on their offer to carry the cost of a bionic arm known as an i-Limb that would make a big difference to her life.

Harvey was born without a right forearm and could not use a prosthesis while she was still growing. However, this did not impede her sheer determination to lead a normal life.

She drives, plays the accordion and piano and was actively involved in a variety of sports while in school.

At the age of 18, she was invited to the demonstration of a new high-tech prosthesis, developed by a company in Edinburgh, Scotland.

When she was chosen to interact with the company at a venue in Durban, she was sold on the product.

She then approached a big Durban company for help. But when they changed their minds, she was devastated.

This prompted her family, friends, and her hometown community of Mooi River to start the Courtney Harvey Fund.

Speaking to The Witness yesterday, Harvey’s sister Casey said they are well on their way to the halfway mark in the funds that they have raised.

“The Courtney Harvey Fund committee and family thanks the public for their kind donations and prizes donated towards helping Courtney reach her dream,” Casey Harvey said.

Donations can be made to The Courtney Harvey Fund, FNB, Mooi River 22-05-25, Account number 74197230359, type: call account.
