THE Cannondale Vredestein team of Jakob Fuglsang (Denmark) and Roel Paulissen (Belgium) rode away with the overall honours after a testing eight days in the saddle in South Africa’s toughest mountain bike stage race, the Absa Cape Epic.

The Epic finished at Lourensford near Somerset West last Saturday. With a nine-minute time advantage built up over the last couple of stages, Fuglsang and Paulissen solidified their position when they crossed the finish line among the leading riders who sprinted the last couple of metres.

First to cross the finish line of the final stage to secure second place overall (36:10:49) was the Bulls team, Germans Karl Platt and Stefan Sahm, in a time of 2:42,21.

Following the Bulls 0,03 seconds later were Germans Hannes Genze and Jochen Kaess of Alb-Gold Mountainbike. They finished fourth overall at 36:28,35. Cannondale Vredestein were a second later, and their overall time of 36:01,45 took top honuors.

The best South Africa performers, MTN Energade (1), Kevin Evans and David George, claimed overall third place (36:18,34). Full results and stories on
